Matching, as an adjective, means things that go together — same colour, same style, same pattern: matching socks, a matching coat and hat. Clothes shops and everyday talk use it all the time; it is not a fancy word. Though actually the same spelling also turns up when people pair things: matching names to faces, matching a student with a teacher. Banks and charities talk about matching funds, when they give the same amount you give. This match is the “go together / be a pair” match, not the fire-stick match — the two English words look the same and catch out.
