Think of your own phone as a small box down here, and the internet as a big shared shelf up there. Uploading is lifting a file off your box and putting it up on that shelf, where other people or other machines can reach it. The 'up' is the direction of the move — away from your device, out to the network; pulling something back down the other way is download.
