核心畫面

Picture a bare wooden chair frame, and then someone building a soft layer onto it: padding first, then cloth or leather pulled tight and down. Upholstery is that soft layer, and it is also the making of it. English lets one word be both the material and the work, which is why the chair can have torn upholstery and go away for upholstery in the same week.

From the word’s history

First recorded in 1597, from upholster (the worker or the work) plus the ending -y, which English also uses to name a trade or its product, as in bakery and pottery.

最早的紀錄在 1597 年,來自 upholster(做這行的人或這份工作)加上字尾 -y。英文常用這個字尾把一門手藝變成「那一行」或「那種產品」,像 bakery、pottery。
