Carpentry is the skill and the work of making things from wood: measuring, cutting, joining, and building. A carpenter is the person; carpentry is what they do, and also the trade itself. It covers house work such as beams, floors, doors, and roofs, and smaller work such as shelves and frames, though people may use other words, such as , for the finer indoor work. It is a practical, everyday word for a job and a craft — not slang, and not especially formal.
