    not getting the result you wanted, or not doing the thing you were trying to do. It can describe a try, a plan, or a person who has not done well at something.

    「unsuccessful」是 un + successful，意思是「試了、做了，但沒有得到想要的結果」。它可以形容一次嘗試（an unsuccessful attempt）、一個計畫、一份申請，也可以形容一個人在某件事上一直沒做出成績（an unsuccessful applicant 就是「沒被錄取的人」）。可以想成 success 是「事情走到你要的那個結果」，加上 un- 就是「沒走到那裡」——講的是結果，不是在說這個人不好。最常見的句型是 be unsuccessful in doing something。

Someone reaches for a goal — the attempt really happens — but the thing does not come. The word assumes a real try behind it, and simply records that this try did not bring the wanted result.

比較像：有人朝著一個明確的目標伸手去拿，手伸出去了，動作也做完了，但東西沒到手。重點在「有試」這件事——unsuccessful 預設前面存在一次真正的嘗試（申請、比賽、手術、談判），只是那次嘗試沒有帶出想要的結果。它跟 failed 的味道不太一樣：failed 聽起來像整件事塌了，unsuccessful 比較平、比較像結果登記表上的一欄，只是冷靜地記下「這次沒有成」。
