If you come back empty-handed, you went to get something — a job, a prize, a cheap buy, a fish — and you got none of it. The picture is simple: your hands have nothing in them. That “got nothing” meaning is the one you will meet most in stories. People also say it when you arrive carrying nothing, or go to a party with no gift. It is everyday English, a little colourful, not stiff. It is not about being poor in general; it is about this one trip or try.
