A hitchhiker is a person who travels to places by getting free rides from drivers of passing cars, often standing by the road with a thumb up. The verb is ; the person is the hitchhiker. It used to feel adventurous; many parents now treat it as unsafe, so you hear it less as a plan and more in stories. Though actually, writers also borrow it: a hitchhiker idea is one that rides along with something else, not invited but going the same way — a seed on your sock is a hitchhiker in that looser sense.
