You can picture 'thought' as whatever your mind produces and holds: it is 'think' caught and kept. Sometimes it is a single piece — one idea that pops up. Sometimes it is the whole working of the mind, or the care and attention you pour into something. The same word covers the product (an idea), the activity (thinking), and the caring behind it.
