Borrowed from Old French superiour, from Latin superior 'higher, upper'.

源自古法文 superiour，來自拉丁文 superior「較高的」。

Two things put side by side, and one of them sits higher. Everything the word does comes from that vertical comparison: higher in quality, higher on the org chart, or — when a person acts as if the height is theirs by nature — higher in their own eyes.

可以想成：兩樣東西放在一起比，其中一個位置比較高。這個字所有的用法都從這個「高一階」的畫面出發：品質比較高、職位比較高，或者一個人自以為天生就站得比較高。它跟 better 的差別在於 superior 一定帶著「相比之下」的意味，而且語氣正式，後面接的是 to 不是 than。
