A subordinate is someone who works under another person and takes direction from them — an employee compared to their boss, a junior officer compared to a senior one. As an adjective, subordinate means lower in rank or less important compared to something else — 'a subordinate role', 'subordinate to the main goal'. The feeling of the word is always about a relationship: something (or someone) is subordinate only compared to something else that is above it — it is never just 'small' or 'weak' by itself.
