    The woman who is married to your father and who is not your own mother — usually she joined your family when your father married again.

    「stepmother」就是「爸爸的太太，但不是生你的那個媽媽」，中文說「繼母」。前面的 step- 可以想成「因為一場新的婚姻而多出來的家人」，所以 stepfather（繼父）、stepsister（繼姊妹）、stepbrother（繼兄弟）都是從同一個想法長出來的字。要小心它跟 mother-in-law 不一樣：mother-in-law 是「配偶的媽媽」（婆婆／岳母），stepmother 是「爸爸的太太」，跟你自己有沒有結婚完全無關。

Wiktionary

A woman who becomes part of your family when your father marries her. She is not the mother you were born to; the step- prefix marks the tie as one made by marriage.
