組成step- + son. Old English already had the whole word as stēopsunu, so this is not a modern invention — English speakers have needed it for well over a thousand years. The step- part started out meaning something closer to 'bereaved, left without a parent', and only later shifted to today's meaning of 'related by marriage'.
