She may live with you or not, and she may be a small girl or a grown woman with children of her own — the word says nothing about age, only about how the two of you are related. From her side, you are her stepmother or . Like the other step- words, it is a plain, official word rather than a warm one. Plenty of people say "my daughter" in everyday talk about a stepdaughter they raised, and bring out "stepdaughter" only when the exact relationship matters — filling in a form, explaining who is who at a wedding, sorting out a will. Nothing is wrong with saying it; just be aware that choosing it marks a line that the family may or may not feel.
組成step- + daughter. The step- comes from an old English piece meaning bereaved or orphaned, used long ago for a child who had lost a parent; it later came to mark family joined by a new marriage. Nothing to do with steps you walk on.
