    the man who is married to your mother but who is not your own father. He often lives with you and helps look after you like a parent.

    「stepfather」是「跟你媽媽結婚、但不是你親生爸爸的那個男人」，中文叫「繼父」。step- 這個字首可以想成「從另一段婚姻走過來，站進這個家」，同一組還有 stepmother（繼母）、stepbrother（繼兄弟）、stepsister（繼姊妹）。它只說明家裡的關係，本身沒有好壞的意思——很多人跟繼父感情很好，口語裡就直接說 stepdad，聽起來更親近。

Wiktionary

A man who joins your family by marrying your mother. He often lives with you and does the things a father does, but he is not the father you were born to. The step- prefix marks family created by marriage rather than by birth.
