You can think of a spread bet as betting on a number rather than on a side. Someone offers you a range — a spread — and you say the real figure will end up above it or below it. Then the distance does the rest: every step the real number travels your way pays you, and every step it travels the other way costs you. Nothing is fixed at the start, because nobody knows yet how far the number will go.
