From sop, a piece of bread dipped in liquid, plus -y. The word has meant soaked from the start. Wiktionary notes that despite the similar sound and meaning, the emotional sense is not etymologically related to sappy.
來自 sop（泡在湯汁或牛奶裡的麵包）加上 -y，所以這個字一開始講的就是「吸飽了水」。來源另外提醒一點：雖然 sappy 聽起來很像、意思也接近，但那個「多愁善感」的意思和 sappy 在字源上沒有關係。
