Schmaltzy describes a song, film, book, or speech that deals with love and sadness in a way that feels silly and not serious enough. Informal. If something is schmaltzy, the feelings are laid on thick on purpose, and the speaker usually does not admire that. A schmaltzy ending might have slow music, shining eyes, and a hug that lasts too long. You can like a story and still call one scene schmaltzy. It is a judgment about tone, not about whether love or sadness are real.
