You can picture somewhere as 'some place, but I'm not pinning down exactly which'. There IS a spot — it's real — you just leave it vague, either because you don't know it or don't need to say it. From that 'a point I won't pin down' idea, the word stretches from places to numbers (somewhere around 30 = roughly there on the scale) and into the feeling of finally arriving 'someplace' on a task (getting somewhere = making real progress).
