Picture searching a map and finding no dot at all — not one place fits. Nowhere is that empty result. English then puts the empty result to work in three ways: an effort that arrives at no place (you got nowhere), a distance measured to nothing (nowhere near), and a thing whose starting point cannot be found (out of nowhere).
