industry sector · noun · C1
One part of a country's business or money activity, such as farming, banking, or factories.
You can picture a sector as one slice cut out of a larger whole — like one wedge of a pie, or one zone marked off on a big map. The whole thing (a country's economy, a wide battlefield) is divided up, and a sector is one of those marked-off parts, with a clear boundary around it.
From Latin sector, related to secare 'to cut'. The root sense of 'a cut-off portion' (as in a geometric sector of a circle) still underlies every modern use.
