Unfold, in the simple, physical sense, means to open something out that was folded — you unfold a map, a letter, a piece of paper, a chair. But English also uses unfold for stories and events: when a situation 'unfolds', it slowly happens and becomes clear over time, like a story revealing itself step by step — 'the events of that night slowly unfolded'. In this second use, nobody is folding anything; it is just a gentle, natural way to talk about something developing in front of you.
