Think of it as doing something the way reason would have you do it — standing on the side where other people, looking at the same facts, would nod and say 'that makes sense'. From that one picture the word stretches two ways: outward to what is fair to ask or expect of someone, inward to a person staying cool and thinking instead of being carried by feeling. And once 'reasonable' means 'acceptable, fair enough', the word can also just mark a amount — good enough, not the best.
