You can think of probing as something thin being pushed in to reach what the surface hides. A doctor uses a probe to feel what the eye cannot see; an engineer pushes one into a machine to find the fault. Put that movement into language and you get a question that goes past the polite answer to the part that was left out. Put it into a person's eyes and you get a look that keeps going until it reaches what was not said.

probing 可以想成一根細細的東西往裡面伸，去碰表面遮住的那一層。醫生用探針去摸眼睛看不到的地方；工程師把探頭伸進機器裡找問題。把這個動作換成語言，就是一個問題不停在客套的答案上，而是往下問到被省略掉的那部分。把它換成眼神，就是一個人一直看著你，直到看見你沒說出口的東西。
