You can think of probing as something thin being pushed in to reach what the surface hides. A doctor uses a probe to feel what the eye cannot see; an engineer pushes one into a machine to find the fault. Put that movement into language and you get a question that goes past the polite answer to the part that was left out. Put it into a person's eyes and you get a look that keeps going until it reaches what was not said.
