not real, for play · adjective · B2
Not real or imaginary — used especially by children in games.
Picture someone putting on a face that does not match what is inside: they know the truth, and they behave as if something else were true. The word always has two layers — the real state underneath and the show on top — and it stays neutral about why. A child at a tea party and a witness lying to the police are doing the same structural thing.
