Positional means “to do with position” — where someone or something sits, or what place a person has in a group or a job. A positional advantage in a game is a better place, not necessarily more points or more pieces. In an office, a positional title is the name of the job (manager, assistant), as opposed to the person’s own name. Sport, chess, grammar, and workplace talk all use it. Though actually, students sometimes hear it and think only of a job; a ball on a field, a piece on a board, or a word in a sentence can be positional too — it is about where it sits. The word is a bit technical. Everyday English often just says “about position” or “in that place.”
