From Latin parens (father or mother), a noun from parere (to bring forth, give birth to, produce). A parent is literally the one who brings forth — so anything that produces others of its kind can be a parent.

來自拉丁文 parens（父或母），源自動詞 parere（生出、產出）。parent 字面就是「生出（下一代）的那一方」——所以凡是能產出同類的東西，也都能叫 parent。
