Guardian traces back through Old French 'garder' (to guard, watch over) to a Germanic root *wardōn 'to watch' — the same root behind 'guard', 'ward' and 'warden'. So a guardian is literally a watcher-over.
guardian 經由古法語 garder（守衛、看守）上溯到日耳曼語詞根 *wardōn（看守、注視），跟 guard（守衛）、ward、warden（看守人）同源。所以 guardian 字面上就是『盯著、看守著、護著的人』，保護的畫面從字根就寫進去了。
