From Old French parcelle 'a small piece', from Late Latin particella, from Latin particula, diminutive of pars 'part'.

Picture something wrapped up into one bundle with edges you can see: this much, and no more. That bounded portion is the thread — a package tied for the post, a marked-off piece of land, a little pastry parcel with the filling closed inside.
