From Old English æcer "field, tilled land", from Proto-Germanic *akraz and ultimately Proto-Indo-European *h₂éǵros "field, pasture" — a relative of Latin ager (as in agriculture). Originally it named the open field itself, not a fixed size; the precise 4,840 square yards came much later, when the day's ploughing had to be written down in law.
