Ontario is a province in Canada — a large piece of the country with its own government. It sits in the east of central Canada and holds more than a third of all Canadians. Toronto, the country’s largest city, is here. Ottawa, the capital of the whole country, is also here, on the border with Quebec. The province takes its name from Lake Ontario, one of the Great Lakes between Canada and the United States. English speakers stress the middle: on-TAIR-ee-oh. For a student in Taiwan this is a geography and news word, and a place-name you will hear if someone talks about studying in Canada. It is a proper name, so it takes a capital O. People say in Ontario, not on Ontario, unless they mean the lake.
組成Probably from Wyandot ontari꞉io, literally “great lake.” If so, from older Iroquoian roots with that meaning.
