Atop means on the top of something: a bird atop the wall, a flag atop the hill. It sits before a noun, like a short 'on top of.' The word is a bit literary or old-fashioned. In speech, most people say on top of or just on. You will meet atop in stories, captions, and headlines more than in chat. It can also follow a verb with nothing after it ('the castle sat atop'), but that is rare. Though actually, it is not the everyday way to say someone is 'on top' in a ranking or a competition; on top still does that job better. Atop is about place.
