    正式Many; existing in large numbers.

    「numerous」就是「很多的」，但比 many、a lot of 更正式，常出現在書面、新聞或正式報告裡。日常聊天大家會說 a lot of 或 lots of；要寫得正式、或強調某事發生過很多次時，才用 numerous，例如 on numerous occasions（在許多場合）。

From Middle English numerous, from Latin numerōsus 'numerous, abundant', from numerus 'number'.

Think of a crowd so big you can't count the heads — there are simply a lot of them. 'Numerous' is the formal cousin of 'many': it just means a large number, but in a written, slightly tone.
