核心畫面

Picture something being taken in and used: a baby drinking milk, rain sinking into soil, oil going into dry skin. Nourish can be thought of as that whole small process, not just the giving. Food is handed over, the living thing takes it in, and afterwards it is stronger than before. Every other use of the word keeps that shape. Only the thing being fed changes — first a body, then a person's inner life, then a feeling that would fade if nobody put anything into it.

From the word’s history

The word comes through Old French from Latin nutrire, whose first meaning was to suckle or feed. The oldest picture is therefore a baby at the breast, and the same root also gave English nurse and nutrition. That is why the feeding image sits so close to the surface even when the word is used for hopes and minds.

這個字經由古法文來自拉丁文 nutrire，原意是「哺乳、餵養」。所以它最早的畫面是餵奶，同一條線上還長出了 nurse 和 nutrition。也因為這樣，即使今天用來講希望和心靈，那個「餵」的畫面還是浮在很表面的地方。
