From Middle English foster, from Old English fōstor 'food, sustenance'.

Picture taking something into your home and feeding it until it can stand on its own — knowing all along that it is not legally, or originally, yours. A child comes to live with a family for a while; a young idea is given room and attention until it grows. The word is about providing the conditions for growth, not about ownership.
