One way to hold narc: it is a shell left behind when English chops a long word down to its first syllable. Narcotics officer becomes narc. Narcosis becomes narc. becomes narc. And a separate old word for an , nark, drifted into the same spelling. So the four letters are not one meaning with branches; they are one short sound that several different words have moved into. The one you meet first, and the one the dictionaries lead with, is the drugs officer. For the rest, the words standing next to it are what tell you which tenant is at home: police and crime, or depth and diving, or somebody who only talks about themselves.
