One way to picture it: a mind is not a still thing, it leans. Add -ed to mind and you get a label for which way it leans. Put a word in front and you have said which direction — open, fair, money, safety. Change what stands in front, and the same word points somewhere else.

From mind + the adjective ending -ed. The ending is the part that turns a thing you have into a description of you, which is why the word never works alone here: something has to say which mind is meant.
