Manipulate has two main meanings. First, it means to handle or control something physically or with your hands or a tool — 'the surgeon manipulated the instrument carefully.' Second, and much more common, it means to control or influence a person , often through lies or clever tricks, to get what you want — 'he manipulated her into giving him money' means he tricked or pressured her . This second meaning is almost always negative.
