Picture the sheet of paper somebody puts on the table after everyone has agreed on the plan. On it are the unglamorous questions: how many buses, which room, what time the food is ready, where the boxes are tonight, who carries what. Nothing on that sheet is the idea, and nothing on it is the reason for doing the thing — but the idea does not happen without it. That sheet is logistics. Make it bigger and it becomes a warehouse full of parcels; make it older and it becomes an army trying to get bread and boots over a mountain. The size changes; the questions do not.

From the word’s history

From French logistique, coined or made popular around 1830 by the military writer Jomini, built on logis, a lodging place — the word appears in titles such as marechal des logis, the officer of lodging. The first questions it named were where the people sleep and how the supplies get there, which is still what the sheet of paper asks.
