Installation comes from Medieval Latin installare (in- 'in' + stallum 'stall'): its first English use, in the early 15th century, was the ceremony of seating a churchman in his own stall in the choir. The equipment sense — 'act of setting up, placing in position for use' — only arrives in 1882, which is why the ceremony sense sits at the far end of the modern entry despite being the oldest.
