As a noun, a placing is the position you finish in — in a race, a competition, an exam ranking, any ordered list. 'She was happy with her placing' means she was happy with where she came. It is often used with a number: a third placing, a top-ten placing. You will meet it most in sports reporting and in British English; American writing usually prefers 'finish' or 'place' ('a third-place finish'). The plural 'placings' is common when a report lists everyone's results: 'the final placings were announced'. Keep this apart from the other, much more frequent use of the same spelling, which is just the -ing form of the verb 'place': 'placing the box on the table', 'the placing of an order'. Both exist and both are correct; only context tells you which one you are looking at. As a rough guide, if 'placing' comes after a word like 'her', 'a', 'his', or 'final' and no object follows it, it is the ranking noun.
