You can picture injure as damage done to a body: a fall, a crash, a fight, and afterwards some part of the person no longer works the way it did — a twisted knee, a cut arm, a back that will not bend. It is the verb news reports use ("three people were injured"), and it points at the damage itself rather than at the pain of it.
