Think of heat moving out of the weather and into the way a person acts. A voice that has heat in it snaps back before you finish speaking; a chase that has heat in it stays right on your heels. Hotly never tells you the temperature of anything — it tells you how much heat went into the doing: the quick angry answer, and the hard, close-pressed effort.

From Old English hātlīċe, meaning ardently or fervently; simply hot plus the ending -ly. The word has described heat in people's behaviour, not in things, for a very long time.
