Picture a temple with many priests working in it, and one man standing above all of them. Some holy things only he may do, and only he may walk into the holiest room. Everyone else waits outside and follows what he says. That picture — one figure at the very top, with followers below — is the part that travels when the words leave the temple.

noun · C1

Someone treated as the leading figure of an art form, a subject or a movement — the person whose work and ideas change how everyone else in it thinks and works.
