    A godfather is a man chosen by a child's parents to have a special, caring role in that child's life — traditionally connected to a religious ceremony (baptism/), promising to help guide the child, especially in matters of faith. Outside religion, 'godfather' has also come to mean a powerful, older man seen as the person who started or leads something important — 'the godfather of rock and roll' means the person seen as the founder of that style. And thanks to the famous movie 'The Godfather', many people now also think of a powerful crime boss when they hear the word.
