A raised table or platform used in religious ceremonies. In a church, it's where the priest performs communion. In ancient religions, it was often a stone table where people left gifts or offerings for a god. You'll also see it in the expression 'left at the altar' — meaning someone was abandoned by their partner right before or during the wedding.

From Old English altar and Old French auter, from Latin altāre, probably related to adolere 'to burn': 'burning place'.
