The doyen of a group is the member others treat as the senior one — often the oldest, but just as often the person with the longest record or the most respect. You hear it of writers, diplomats, scientists, cooks, journalists. It is a French guest in English, so it feels a little formal and a little like praise; you would not call a the doyen of the class unless you were being grand on purpose. Though actually, it does not have to mean 'the best at the work.' It means 'the elder of this circle, the one people look to.' A woman in the same role may be called a , though some writers now use doyen for anyone.
