adjective · B1
Used about a place, usually a building, that people believe the spirit of a dead person keeps coming back to.
The picture to hold is something that keeps coming back to the same spot and will not leave. Not a single visit — a return, and another return, always uninvited and never at a time you choose. In the oldest and clearest use the spot is a building and the visitor is a dead person's spirit. Move the same picture inside a person, and the thing that keeps returning is a memory or a fear; move it onto the face, and you can see on someone that this is happening to them.

adjective · B2
