One way to picture ghost: something that is there and not there at the same time — you catch it out of the corner of your eye and cannot be sure. That half-presence carries the whole word: the spirit of the dead, the past that will not leave, a smile too faint to be certain of, a second image on a screen, and the writer whose name never appears.
