Tormented describes someone who is suffering very badly, usually inside their own mind — full of pain, worry, guilt, or grief that won't go away. You'll hear it about people ('a tormented soul', 'she looked tormented') and it comes from the verb 'to torment', which means to cause someone great, often repeated, suffering — physically, or, more often in modern use, emotionally.
