From Late Latin explānātōrius, from the stem of explānāre 'to explain'.

One way to see it: the part whose only job is to make the rest clear. The diagram has a caption, the form has a , the report has an opening paragraph — none of them add new content, they stand beside it and let you understand what is already there.
